18 Mar “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
Reportedly attributed to Einstein, the quote highlights the importance of recognising and playing to our strengths.
When I was a young(er) lad, many of my school reports would reflect that “I was pretty good at…. But really needed to work on my ….”
So from an early period many of us were given feedback that reflected our weaknesses, which in turn could lead to a limiting belief in our capabilities.
The reverse has been the case in more recent times with some media commentators reporting how the recent generation of school leavers have had too much encouragement … “you can do anything….” Whilst this is a great sentiment to bestow on our kids – there has to be a balance; the world is increasingly competitive- opportunities are harder to come by…. So playing to our natural strengths should help in delivering “success” – whatever that is!!
